WinMerge
WinMerge is a file/directory comparison utility I’ve been using for a while (as opposed to WinDiff). If you have bucked up for Beyond Compare then ignore this message.
I find this tool pretty handy but a couple of days ago I started using it in SOS. If you only use SourceGear Vault then you can disregard this part of the message (but you might want WinMerge for other things anyway).
To use it in SOS, go to Tools/Options and then the External Programs page. Put “C:\Program Files\WinMerge\WinMerge.exe /ub /wl /wr” (without the quotes) into the two “Application for comparing’ boxes. Now when you do differences it uses WinMerge to display. Much cooler.
You can get WinMerge at http://winmerge.sourceforge.net/. It’s an open source project.

Glenn,
I am curious why you said I could ignore the message if I already own Beyond Compare. Do you think Beyond Compare is a better tool, or just because it is a similar product?

I don't have access to Beyond Compare (cheapo) so I just figured that if someone had paid for a copy then they would want to use it instead of something else. I think the two apps are similar in functionality. I in no way meant to disparage Beyond Compare.
I got the idea for using WinMerge in SOS from some other blog entry or article that I came across (but didn't bookmark so I can't refer back to it) where that person was proclaiming how cool using Beyond Compare for the SOS comparison utility. Since I had been using WinMerge I tried it as the comparison utility and it worked fine. Much nicer than WinDiff and costs the same as WinDiff.
